China to Invest USD10 Million to Build Global Agriculture Science Alliance

[2019.11.14, Thu 05:03] Nov. 14 - The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences plans to invest USD10 million over the next five years to set up a worldwide co-operative focused on developing cutting-edge farming technologies to overcome the latest challenges to the industry. The CAAS launched the program yesterday at the Global Forum of Leaders for Agricultural Science and Technology in Chengdu, Xinhua News Agency reported. Early research will cover green agricultural development, such as molecular design breeding, smart agriculture, biosecurity and recycling of waste. The program will encourage and fund researchers to conduct internationally coordinated studies to overcome technical challenges in key projects, the report added, saying it will also push external partners to contribute their money or other resources to the initiative. CAAS backed the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization at the forum, where the UNFAO's Director-General Qu Dongyu said the world is facing a growing number of agricultural challenges, such as eliminating poverty and extreme hunger, climate change, depleting resources, environmental pollution and risks of trans-boundary animal diseases and plant-devouring pests. CAAS wants to promote global cooperation between similar organizations to help tackle these problems using science and technology, President Tang Huajun said at the forum. It is already connected with agricultural research institutions in more than 100 countries and regions and 40 international organizations, multinational corporations and foundations.
